# Eurowings Compensation Claim: Delays & Cancellations

> €250, €400 or €600 from Eurowings after a 3-hour arrival delay. A flight brought forward by over an hour is a cancellation — Eurowings lost that case.

Eurowings owes €250, €400 or €600 when you land three or more hours late at your final destination, when it cancels with under 14 days' notice, or when it denies you boarding. It holds a German operating licence, so EU261 covers the flights it operates out of Europe and into Europe alike; a departure from a UK airport is UK261 instead.

Article 7 names cancellation and denied boarding on its face. The same fixed sum after a three-hour arrival delay comes from *Sturgeon* (C-402/07 and C-432/07, 2009) and was upheld in *Nelson* (C-581/10 and C-629/10, 2012). The bands are in the [amounts table](/guides/eu261-uk261-amounts/).

## Which regime applies to your Eurowings flight

| Your flight | Regime |
|---|---|
| Departs an airport in the EU or EEA, **or** arrives in the EU from a third country on Eurowings | **EU261** — euro amounts, enforcement body of the country you left |
| Departs a UK airport | **UK261** — £220, £350 or £520, and the CAA route |

## The case Eurowings is actually in

Eurowings GmbH is a named carrier in the joined cases decided on 21 December 2021 — [C-146/20, C-188/20, C-196/20 and C-270/20](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A62020CJ0146), alongside Corendon Airlines, Azurair and Austrian Airlines. Two holdings from that judgment are worth having in front of you when you write:

- A flight whose departure is **brought forward by more than one hour** is a cancellation, not a schedule change. That opens Article 7 instead of leaving you with nothing.
- Where the early arrival is the result of that brought-forward flight, the airline may **not** halve the payment under Article 7(2).

If a text message moved you to an earlier departure and you took it, you have not waived anything. The claim is a cancellation claim: use the [cancelled flight letter](/guides/cancellation-compensation-letter/) and say which flight was brought forward, by how long, and when you were told.

> **C-501/17 is not a Eurowings case, and quoting it as one damages your claim.** [*Germanwings v Pauels*](https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX%3A62017CJ0501) (4 April 2019) names Germanwings GmbH as the party. It held that a tyre damaged by debris on the runway **is** an extraordinary circumstance — and that the airline must still prove it deployed all its staff, equipment and financial means to limit the resulting delay. It is a case an airline cites against you, not one you cite at it.

## Where the bands fall on a Eurowings route

Great-circle distance to the final destination sets the amount, and Eurowings' leisure network sits right on the thresholds. From the airport coordinates this site ships:

| Route | Great-circle | Band |
|---|---|---|
| Cologne – Berlin | 469 km | €250 |
| Düsseldorf – London Heathrow | 502 km | €250 |
| Düsseldorf – Vienna | 788 km | €250 |
| Stuttgart – Palma | 1,139 km | €250 |
| Düsseldorf – Palma | 1,342 km | €250 |
| Düsseldorf – Heraklion | 2,303 km | €400 |
| Düsseldorf – Gran Canaria | 3,190 km | €400 |
| Düsseldorf – Hurghada | 3,511 km | €600 |

Two lines there decide arguments. Palma is 158 km short of the 1,500 km threshold, so the whole Balearic programme is the €250 band. Gran Canaria is 3,190 km but both ends are inside the Union, and Article 7(1)(b) caps an intra-Community flight at €400 however long it is. Hurghada is 321 km further, outside the Union, and 11 km past the 3,500 km line — €600. The measuring rule is in [how flight distance is measured](/guides/how-flight-distance-is-measured/).

## Name the right company

Article 2(b) puts the obligation on the airline that operated the flight. Lufthansa Group sells under several brands, and a booking made on one site can be flown by another company in the group — Discover Airlines is a separate carrier, not a Eurowings sub-brand. Read the "operated by" line on your confirmation, not the logo at the top of the email, and see [which airline actually owes you](/guides/codeshare-which-airline-pays/).

## Where a Eurowings claim goes after a refusal

We could not open Eurowings' own passenger-rights page: eurowings.com returned HTTP 403 to every automated request on 6 September 2026, including its own site root. We do not publish a claim URL we have not opened. Use the airline's own help centre, keep the reference number, and send the same text by email.

Germany's enforcement body is the **Luftfahrt-Bundesamt** (LBA). Its [complaint page](https://www.lba.de/EN/AirPassengersRights/Complaint_Form/Complaint_Form_node.html) takes complaints under Regulation 261/2004 and under Regulation 1107/2006, asks for your travel documents and receipts, and describes complaints feeding into administrative offence proceedings. It does not say it will order the airline to pay you. Germany also has a conciliation body for travel and transport, the [Schlichtungsstelle Reise & Verkehr](https://www.schlichtung-reise-und-verkehr.de/en/), which is free for consumers — we did not verify whether Eurowings takes part, so check before you file. When the money has to be collected rather than requested, the route is a court order: see [the German Mahnverfahren for a flight claim](/guides/germany-mahnverfahren-flight-claim/). For a UK departure, neither CAA-approved scheme listed Eurowings on 6 September 2026, which leaves CAA PACT, and the CAA says PACT cannot make a binding decision.

## My Eurowings flight left earlier than booked. Can I claim?

If it was brought forward by more than an hour, the judgment above treats that as a cancellation, so Article 7 applies unless you were told 14 days or more in advance. Being warned in a text does not remove the claim; it changes what the airline has to prove about notice.

## Does the LBA make Eurowings pay me?

Nothing on its page says so. The Court of Justice has held that Member States **may** authorise their enforcement body to order payment on an individual complaint, but it is a choice each state makes. Treat the LBA as the body that puts pressure on the airline and records the breach, and a court as the body that collects.

## Rules in force today

This is the law that applies to a flight you take today. A revision of Regulation 261/2004 was adopted in July 2026 — the Parliament approved the conciliation text on 7 July 2026 and the Council gave final approval on 13 July 2026 — and it is not yet in force: it applies 12 months after it enters into force following publication in the Official Journal, and the final text sets the details. See [what the 2026 EU261 reform changes](/guides/eu261-reform-2026/).
